It's the single most common Wolf cooking call we take across the Bay: a sealed burner on a Wolf range or cooktop clicks and clicks but is slow to catch — worst on the first cook of a damp, foggy morning. Nine times out of ten it isn't the expensive control part you're picturing.
Why Bay Area mornings make it worse
After a humid night — and the Bay delivers plenty of those from the Peninsula coast to the East Bay flats — moisture settles under the sealed burner cap and across the spark electrode. The igniter keeps firing (that's the clicking) but the gas is slow to light until the area dries out. A kitchen with marginal ventilation, common in older Bay homes, only encourages it.
What you can safely check first
With the burner off and cool, lift the burner cap and grate. Look for spilled food bridging the gap around the small ceramic igniter, and for a cap that isn't seated flat. Dry everything thoroughly and reseat the cap squarely — a surprising number of "won't light" burners come back to life after that, because the moisture and debris were the whole problem. What you should not do is poke at the igniter electrode or open anything beyond the cap; the wiring and the spark module are technician territory.
When it really is the hardware
If the burner is clean, dry and seated and still won't light reliably, the usual culprits are a cracked igniter electrode, a worn spark module, or a clogged burner port — not a catastrophic failure. We test the spark, swap the failed igniter or module with the genuine Wolf part matched to your model, and clear the ports. It's a bounded repair, and on a Wolf cooktop built to last it's almost always worth doing rather than replacing.
