A Sub-Zero panel doesn’t throw a single tidy error code like a check-engine light — it shows a mix of words (“Service”, “tested”, SNOOZE), letter prefixes (EC, EE, PA, AFT), a bare “F”, and internal numbers. This guide is about those display messages and the diagnostic/service mode behind them — distinct from a fixed error-code table. Honest framing: messages tell you which system is unhappy. Resetting one hides the warning — it doesn’t repair the part. Codes that keep returning, anything in the sealed system, the board, or a wine zone are technician work. “Service” on the panel — and the VACUUM CONDENSER alert
This is the message Bay Area owners ask about most, and it’s the most misread. “Service” doesn’t mean the compressor is dying. It means the control board logged a performance fault — usually that the compressor ran longer than expected to hold temperature. Three things drive that, in order: a door gasket gone stiff after 15–20 years, a condenser coil choked with dust or pet hair, and only then a genuine sealed-system fault. The fix is a checklist: verify your temperatures, clean the condenser, confirm the door seals, then power-cycle to clear it. If it comes back, it’s a real fault — read it in diagnostic mode (below) or book a visit.
“Tested” — what it means on the display
If you see TESTED, you’re almost certainly in diagnostic (service) mode. It confirms the board ran or completed a self-test of a sensor or component — it’s a status word, not an error. It clears when you exit diagnostic mode and the unit returns to normal operation. Only worry if an actual fault code shows alongside it; that code is what to act on.
The SNOOZE alarm (and “snooze 40140”)
SNOOZE silences an active alarm — most often the door-ajar or high-temperature alarm — for a set period so it stops beeping while you fix the cause. A string like “40140” is the alarm/parameter reference shown with it, not a damage code. Snoozing is perfectly safe, but remember it only mutes the warning. If the high-temp alarm fired, something let the cabinet warm up (a door left open, a failing seal, a cooling fault) — find that before the snooze runs out.
EC, EE, PA, AFT and a lone “F”
Letter prefixes are the board naming a subsystem:
- EC + digits — Sub-Zero’s general “error code” prefix; the digits name the area (sensor, defrost, ice maker, sealed system). On a freezer ice maker, an EC code usually points to the ice-maker module, water valve or a fill/sensor problem — confirm the water line is on first.
- EE — a memory or control-communication fault; the board can’t reliably read/write a stored value. Power-cycle once; if it returns, the control board or its connections need checking.
- PA (e.g. “T7510 PA”) — a power/voltage condition out of range (brown-out, surge, failing outlet). T7510 is the model/board reference. Check the circuit; clean power but PA persists means the board’s power section needs a look.
- AFT controller alarm — an air/anti-frost temperature controller reading outside its band, often tied to defrost or airflow. Note any frost build-up or zone drift and have the sensor/defrost circuit checked if it won’t clear.
- A lone “F” — a fault flag (it may alternate with digits), commonly a sensor or temperature fault. Power-cycle once; if it stays, read the full code in diagnostic mode.
Numeric codes, wine-cooler codes, and “50/50”
Numbers like 1502, 15201, 10C or “685” on the door are internal parameter, model or fault references rather than plain-English errors — and because the same digits can mean different things across model generations, the safe move is to read the full code set in diagnostic mode (or send us a photo) instead of guessing. On wine storage, codes such as 10E and 15E flag a zone sensor or temperature-control fault — act on those promptly, because a wine zone drifting warm is exactly what you don’t want around bottles you care about. Finally, “50/50” isn’t an error at all: it describes an evenly split dual-zone cabinet (a 50/50 fridge-freezer or dual-zone wine unit). If it appears in service mode it’s just identifying the configuration.
How to enter and read diagnostic (service) mode
Before anything, power-cycle: press the unit OFF at the panel (or down at the breaker for ~30 seconds), then back ON. That alone clears one-time glitches.
To enter diagnostic mode on many Sub-Zero built-ins, you hold the on/off (power) pad and press the colder/temperature pad in the sequence documented for your model. The exact combination varies by series, so confirm it against your owner’s manual.
Once in, step through to read the logged codes and sensor states. Seeing several codes at once is normal — the board is sharing its full memory, not reporting multiple separate failures.
Exit to return to normal operation. If a code recurs after a power-cycle, note it (a photo of the panel helps) and book a diagnosis rather than clearing it on repeat.
How to reset the service light
A “Service” / VACUUM CONDENSER alert is cleared by fixing its cause, then power-cycling. Clean the condenser behind the grille first — a dust-clogged coil is the usual trigger.
Next, check the door seals for gaps or tears that let warm air in and overwork the compressor.
Then power the unit off and on (or off 30 seconds at the breaker). With the cause addressed, the alert should clear.
If it comes back after a clean condenser and good seals, it’s flagging a real fault — read it in diagnostic mode or book a technician. Regular condenser maintenance prevents most of these alerts before they ever show.
